“Excuse Me, How Do I Get to the Hospital?” – Year 9 German

In their last unit, our Year 9 students explored city vocabulary and directions, combining language learning with personal reflection and building a deeper understanding of one another as classmates. The aim was not only to strengthen their linguistic skills but also to appreciate the city around them.

As part of the project, students created posters showcasing their six favourite places in the city—the locations where they feel truly happy and at ease. This task encouraged them to reflect on what brings comfort and joy, while also fostering meaningful connections with their peers. In the dynamic and sometimes dramatic period of the MYP Years:D, this activity offered a valuable opportunity to recognise what makes each student feel comfortable and content.

Another key component of the project was a practical directions exercise. Students imagined encountering a tourist and needed to explain, step by step, how to get from point A to point B—for example, from the train station to the hospital. They provided detailed instructions to ensure the tourist could reach their destination successfully. Once the journey was complete, students also recommended their favourite places to visit, adding a personal and authentic touch to their guidance.

This project not only enhanced students’ vocabulary and communication skills but also highlighted the value of personal experiences, preferences, and sharing knowledge with others. It was inspiring to see students’ unique perspectives on the city come to life, creating a vivid map of happiness, comfort, and discovery.

We are proud of our Year 9 students for their creativity, attention to detail, and enthusiasm throughout this unit!
