Cooking Club: Open-Faced Sandwiches
At our most recent Cooking Club meeting, we decided to prepare open-faced sandwiches. This is a simple dish that children could easily make at home as a small snack, surprise their parents with, or even offer to guests when they come to visit.
Although it is a very straightforward recipe, it is a great opportunity for children to practice independence in small everyday tasks. For the children, it felt a bit like assembling a puzzle. Even though we used the same ingredients, every sandwich turned out differently, allowing each child to express their creativity.
We also talked about the importance of eating vegetables for our health, and I was pleasantly surprised by how positively the children responded. Cucumber and radish were definitely not the “enemies” they sometimes expect them to be.
From the radishes, we even managed to create small decorative roses or water lilies, which stood out beautifully on the ham, almost like they were floating on a lake.
I was a little curious to see how the children would react to the sandwiches, as we often bake cakes during our sessions. However, I am happy to say that not a single sandwich was left uneaten.
