Year 5 Exploring Sustainability and Caring for Our World

Spread the love

Year 5 students recently completed an exciting Unit of Inquiry focused on sustainability and how our everyday choices can help protect the Earth. Throughout the unit, students explored different ways people can care for the environment and make responsible decisions for the future.

We began by discussing a simple but important question: How can we save energy in our classroom? Students shared their own ideas and worked creatively to design posters encouraging energy-saving habits. Their posters included practical reminders such as turning off lights, reducing unnecessary electricity use, and being more mindful of resources. These student-created posters are now proudly displayed in our classroom as daily reminders of the positive actions we can take.

As the unit developed, each student selected an individual sustainability topic to investigate. Students carried out their own research and created a detailed blueprint to organize their ideas before moving on to the next stage of the project. Using their research, students designed and developed presentations on topics connected to sustainability and responsible choices. Some students explored electric cars versus fuel-powered vehicles, examining their advantages and disadvantages. Others investigated environmental solutions, eco-friendly ideas, and innovations designed to reduce our impact on the world.

Students also researched important background information, including who developed certain technologies, how they work, and their impact on both society and the environment. To make their presentations interactive and engaging, every student created a quiz for the audience to complete at the end.

The final stage of the project gave students an opportunity to share their learning beyond the classroom. Year 5 proudly presented their work to other Primary students, demonstrating not only their knowledge but also their confidence, communication skills, and ability to think critically about real-world challenges.

Their thoughtful research and presentations showed that even small choices can contribute to building a more sustainable future.
