Designing costumes and habitats: Mammals

Alisa and Nela chose to make mammal costumes. Nela was inspired to make a squirrel costume after recently reading a book “The Squirrels that Squabbled.” She loved the characters and the colour of the animals. Alisa chose a cat as it is her favorite animal.

Nela brought some thick orange and brown wool to school which she wrapped around a cardboard template of a squirrel tale. She chose a furry beige hoody for the body of her costume and cut an orange t-shirt to add a stomach in a contrasting colour. She added ears and of course a bit of orange face paint and her costume was very convincing.

Alisa opted for black leggings and t-shirt which she painted to reflect the black and white pattern of a cat. She also used a headband to attach cardboard ears to her head. Face paint  and a fabric collar and name tag were used to complete the look.

For their habitat they decided to join the birds in their trees. Nela recognized that they have a similar habitat and brought some nuts and pinecones to decorate the habitat and make it more suitable for a squirrel. Alisa recognised that cats often eat birds as part of our learning on food chains. So she thought the trees, with plenty of birds would be the perfect spot for her.

Great job girls!
