Fašiangy (Slovak carnival celebrations) at Our School

Today, February 21st, was a day of joyful carnival celebrations! Our school transformed into a place full of masks, music, and a fantastic atmosphere. Preparations for this day had been ongoing throughout the entire week, as children crafted their own masks, read about carnival traditions, and worked on themed activity sheets.

Carnival is a period of festivity and feasting that lasts from Epiphany to Ash Wednesday. During this time, various celebrations, parades, and feasts take place, with traditional foods including doughnuts, fritters, and other festive delicacies. In the past, carnival was considered a time of joy before the fasting period, and it continues to be celebrated in many regions of Slovakia.

The highlight of our celebrations took place in the school canteen, where we enjoyed delicious traditional doughnuts and an exciting program prepared for us by the volunteer organization Prešporkovo and Inex Slovakia. The children participated in a fun quiz and riddles, learning about carnival traditions. In addition, they had the opportunity to listen to a song played on the violin and even learned some new dances.

Carnival was not only a fun experience for the children but also a valuable opportunity to learn about the traditions and culture of our ancestors. The entire day was filled with laughter, joy, and cheerful togetherness. We look forward to celebrating carnival together again in the coming years!
