Student Led Tutoring System
The Student Council is initiating a new student-driven system for improving academic performance as well as school spirit and providing an opportunity to gain a lot of useful skills. In this system students from Year 10 – Year 13 can become the teachers (or as we call them “Buddy-tutors”) of the students from Year 2 – Year 9.
Any student who meets the before-established criteria can sign up to be a Buddy-tutor from one to several different subjects that they are good at.
Similarly, any student can sign up for the system as Buddy-student asking for help in a particular topic or a subject.
The Student Council will then connect the two depending on the subject of preference and provide with all the necessary tools (classroom, markers, etc.), allowing for the Buddy-tutor to teach and help the Buddy-student, and allowing for the student to learn and improve in a personalized manner.
Benefits
Benefit for the Buddy-student
- Helps with improvement of grades
- Gives SA points
- Gives an opportunity to know people from the upper class that the student wouldn’t usually wouldn’t.
Benefit for the Buddy-tutor
- It gives CAS or SaA points
- Allows to work on communication and teaching skills
- Makes it possible to know people from the lower classes that usually wouldn’t be possible
- Can be a great addition to the portfolio.
Role of teachers
Self evidently, it wouldn’t align with the goals of the system if someone would abuse the system and for instance, without a great knowledge in a subject of math attempt to tutor someone in this subject. Therefore, for the system to work it will require the Buddy-tutors to be approved by the teachers. This itself will be done by the Student Council approaching the teachers and asking whether a certain student can be approved. Furthermore, for the system to be more effective, the teachers are welcome to recommend (nominate) some students to be Buddy-tutors by telling them about the opportunity in person, the same applies for anyone who the teachers find appropriate to be tutored by someone and become Buddy-student.
Conclusion
Overall thank you in advance for contributing to this initiative and hope that it will benefit greatly the school, the students, and the teachers and improve academic life. Let’s make a great school together!
