Exploring Easter with EAL Students
Easter has deep roots in the Christian faith, where it marks the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is the most important celebration in the Christian calendar, symbolising new life, hope, and renewal. Many Christians attend church services on Easter Sunday and reflect on important days such as Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and Easter Monday.
Lower Primary students learned about Easter by watching an interactive quiz video, Peppa Pig’s Easter, which helped them understand Easter traditions in a fun and engaging way. They answered questions together, building their listening and comprehension skills. Afterwards, the children played a vocabulary game to strengthen their Easter word knowledge, making learning enjoyable and meaningful through teamwork and play
With Upper Primary students, we explored the history and traditions of Easter in a fun, interactive way. The children took part in an Easter quiz that introduced them to the Christian story of Jesus’ resurrection and how Easter has been celebrated throughout history. Together, we discovered that Easter is not only a religious celebration but also a time filled with traditions that bring people together.
We also learned that Easter traditions go beyond religion. Long before Christianity, people celebrated the arrival of spring with festivals honouring new life and nature. Customs such as decorating eggs and the idea of the Easter bunny have their origins in these older, pagan traditions.
Today, Easter is celebrated in many ways. While some families attend church, others enjoy cultural traditions like egg painting, egg hunts, baking hot cross buns, and spending time together. However it is celebrated, Easter remains a time of joy, renewal, and connection.
