Climate Change – A blog from CAS
A student from CAS class wanted to share this information about Climate Change.
Introduction:
Climate change is one of the most urgent issues facing mankind today. Climate change is the decisive challenge of our time, affecting all aspects of our lives and the planet we live in. Climate change has had a far-reaching impact on the environment, economy and society. We need to understand climate change and take relevant actions. This article aims to understand what climate change is, the impact of climate change and the actions we can take.
What is climate change?
Climate change refers to major and lasting changes in the earth’s climate, especially the rise in global temperature in recent years. This phenomenon is mainly caused by human activities, such as burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas, which release carbon dioxide (CO2) and greenhouse gasses (GHG) such as methane into the atmosphere. These gasses will absorb heat and lead to the greenhouse effect, thus warming the earth. Climate change refers to significant changes in global temperature, precipitation, wind patterns and other climate indicators over several decades or more. The ocean is rising.
The effect of climate change:
Climate change has a great impact on the environment. The rising temperature leads to the melting of glaciers, rising sea levels, and the loss of biodiversity, all of which are the direct consequences of climate change. In addition, we also know that coral reefs are essential to marine ecosystems, but they are particularly vulnerable to ocean warming and acidification. In addition to some of the problems mentioned earlier, there are also environmental problems such as droughts, storms and heat waves.
Climate change not only causes harm to the environment, but also has a lot of impact on human beings. It will cause a lot of harm to human health, agriculture and their lives, and may even lead to increased poverty and displacement in some families. Some of the environmental problems mentioned above, such as heat waves, floods and storms, will pose significant risks to the global human community. The health effects of climate change include respiratory and heart disease, pest-related diseases such as Lyme disease and West Nile virus, water and food-related diseases, and injuries and deaths. Climate change is also related to the increase in violent crime and poor overall mental health.
The actions we need to take:
First of all, the reason for the increase in global temperature is the increase of carbon dioxide in the air, so in daily life, we choose green travel when traveling to reduce carbon footprint. Try to choose to walk, ride a bicycle or adapt to public transportation to reduce car travel, and we need to support renewable energy. Adopt a plant-based diet, reduce waste through recycling and composting, and choose sustainable products and services. In school, you can hold some lectures on environmental issues, increase students’ awareness of the spread of climate change, promote environmental protection, and strongly support organizations committed to solving climate problems. Improving climate change is a collective challenge that requires collective movement, and every effort is important.
Evidence of climate change:
The evidence of climate change is overwhelming. Scientific measurements show that global temperatures continue to rise, the ice sheet shrinks, sea levels rise, and the frequency of extreme weather events increases. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is a leading body composed of climate scientists, which has repeatedly affirmed the impact of human beings on climate change in its comprehensive reports. (Students who want to know more information can search IPCC, which has a lot of information about climate change on the website.https://www.ipcc.ch/)
Conclusion:
Climate change is not only an environmental problem; it is also a social, economic and moral challenge that requires us to take overall measures. Understanding science, taking individual and collective actions, and maintaining hope are key elements for us towards a sustainable future. The earth is our common home. By taking responsibility for the earth and each other, we can cope with the climate crisis and become stronger and more united. We need to take action to make our common home better.
