Year 8: A Journey Through Food
Food is something every student understands, and that’s exactly why we’ve built our latest language project around it.
In this unit, students are creating a digital magazine (using Canva or a similar tool) focused on meals and their cultural and health significance. But it doesn’t stop at the screen. This project connects language learning with real-life experience, from planning to shopping to cooking.
What students are doing
Each student designs a magazine with:
- A cover page (title, image, and overall theme)
- Three sections:
- Desayuno (Breakfast)
- Almuerzo (Lunch)
- Cena (Dinner)
In each section, they:
- Describe a dish (what it is, when it’s eaten, and its cultural context)
- List ingredients in Spanish, including quantities (e.g., una taza, dos cucharadas, 100 gramos)
- Explain health benefits, encouraging them to think beyond taste
From classroom to real life
A key part of this project is that students chose one recipe and brought it to life.

They:
- Created a shopping list in Spanish, using correct structures and prepositions
- Visited a grocery store to buy the ingredients
- Cooked their chosen meal at school
This step is where things really clicked. Students weren’t just learning vocabulary, they were using it with purpose. Reading labels, identifying ingredients, and following steps in Spanish made the language practical and memorable.
This project goes beyond vocabulary lists. It helps students:
- Connect language to real-life situations
- Develop cultural awareness
- Think about healthy choices in a meaningful way
Most importantly, students see that language is not just something you study, it’s something you use.
