The Power of Water

On Friday 16th October 2026, for the fourth consecutive year, Year 10 students accompanied by Ms Merna, Mr Roman and Mr Raphael, headed to Gabčíkovo to visit the hydroelectric power plant and the Dunajské Luhy nature area.

The topics of the visit included Geography (the Danube river), Slovak & Hungarian recent History, Sciences, Civil Engineering, renewable energies and environmental protection. The Gabčíkovo works have been supplying clean electricity to approximately 8% of the Slovakian electricity grid since 1992, and help regulate the waters of the Danube for navigation and flood control.

Before being taken inside the dam to view the main hall of the hydro electric plant with the 8 huge Kaplan turbines, students watched an informative video in the modern visitor center.

Later on, students enjoyed a break and a short walk near Café Kompa, overlooking the old Danube and the Hungarian riverside, under the warm Autumn sunshine.
