Interdisciplinary Teaching and Learning in EISB

What Is Interdisciplinary Teaching and Learning?

Interdisciplinary teaching and learning is exactly what it sounds like: students combine learning from multiple disciplines to come up with new ways to think about issues and solve problems.

This approach engages students to:

  • Learn more readily
  • Get a deeper understanding of the material
  • Be open-minded to new ideas, concepts, and ways of doing things
  • Understand multiple viewpoints
  • Evaluate conflicting perspectives
  • Build structural knowledge
  • Allowing students to incorporate their theme in multiple projects
  • Encouraging students to make connections across wide areas of learning

Why is interdisciplinary teaching important?

Compared to traditional approaches, an interdisciplinary approach expands what students learn in more subjects. It also changes how students learn by asking them to synthesize multiple pieces of information and knowledge from various areas-subjects instead of taking what they’re told by a teacher.

EISB is a place where interdisciplinary education is taught in a multicultural environment.

School as a model of a multicultural world can promote people’s awareness of what multiculturalism means, what benefits and challenges it brings to people, what knowledge, skills, and behavior are needed for life in a modern multicultural society. Interdisciplinary education is one of the possible ways how the young generation can acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for life in the multicultural society of the 21st century to be able to solve diverse problems and to seek answers to real-life issues.

An interesting interdisciplinary theme placed in a multicultural environment was Chinese New Year, The Year of the Rabbit 2023. Students watched short videos, interacted with educational quizzes, read a history of the Chinese Zodiac calendar, Chinese customs and traditions, high valued respect, food Chinese people eat, found out their own character traits, counted a 12-year cycle, and expressed their vision of the Year of the Rabbit through art.
