Field trip galore

As part of the unit on public spaces, year 4 is investigating them hands on and finding that school work definitely does not need to be cemented in the classroom. We started off our unit by taking a neighborhood walk to observe some public spaces in action. Roads, sidewalks, crossings, parks, benches – many things were noted that are part of some of the public spaces in our community. We had a chance to talk about our rights and responsibilities in these spaces and had more questions going out than going in.

More questions than answers? If you have been part of our EISB community for some time now, you will know that that is exactly what we aim for. In order for learning to happen, we need the learners to be motivated to find out about things, and having questions is the first step. We are letting those questions settle for now, and using our following field trips in order to try and formulate some answers. We did however make sure to jot down our observations, and doing them at the local ice cream shop was the cherry on top.

Our next field trip took us to the public bus and train stations. Once again, many questions emerged, questions that we will use to guide our learning. Students were very impressed with the public transport system. The surrounding areas also provided some much needed rest and play time, but also some very comfortable working spaces. With the beautiful spring weather in mind, our next steps will take us onto publicly maintained walking paths and gardens where we hope to find some answers, but also many more questions.

When I was 8 years old one of my favorite things to do was to visit the market with my grandmother and eat a warm garlicky langoΕ‘. Little did I know at that time that it would be another 32 years until I would be at the same place, reminiscing about the beautiful memories of my grandmother while eating this delicacy. I call it the langoΕ‘ 360. A 360 turn of living, studying and teaching around the world.
