The Importance of Sharing and Taking Turns

In preschool, some of the most valuable lessons children learn are social ones. Among these, sharing and taking turns are key skills that help children build positive relationships and navigate group settings.

Learning to share and take turns is not always easy for young children. At this stage of development, it is natural for them to focus on their own needs and wants. With time and guidance, however, they begin to understand that others have feelings too.

These skills are important because they help children develop empathy, patience, and self-control. When children practice sharing, they learn to consider others and build connections with their peers. Taking turns teaches them to wait, manage frustration, and understand fairness.

Strong sharing and turn-taking skills also support a smoother classroom environment. Children are better able to cooperate during play, participate in group activities, and resolve small conflicts more independently.

Most importantly, these early social experiences lay the foundation for future friendships and teamwork. By learning to share and take turns, children begin to understand what it means to be part of a community.
