Exploring Scales: A Journey of Measurement

During our measurement unit, the Year 1 class embarked on an exciting journey to explore scales and balances firsthand. We began by discussing the concept of measurement and the importance of scales in our daily lives. The students practiced using balances to compare the mass of various items, such as water bottles and shoes, which sparked their curiosity about how scales work.

Next, the class examined the components of a balance and the students were challenged to build their own using toys and various scrap materials. There was a lot of trial and error as designs were tested, adjusted, and refined along the way. The classroom buzzed with creativity and problem-solving as the students developed their unique designs.

Amidst the tinkering and adjustments, moments of discovery and excitement emerged. Each student approached the task with enthusiasm, eagerly sharing their ideas and observations. The collaborative environment encouraged students to learn from each other and think critically about their designs. Through perseverance and teamwork, everyone eventually succeeded in creating a working scale.
