Building Skills Necessary for Effective Communication

Effective communication involves the exchange of ideas, thoughts, opinions, knowledge, and data to ensure clarity and intention in message reception and comprehension. Successful communication leaves both the sender and receiver feeling content.

Communication takes various forms, encompassing verbal and non-verbal expressions, written and visual mediums, as well as attentive listening. It can occur face-to-face, online (across forums, social media platforms, and websites), via telecommunications (using apps, calls, and video), or through traditional mail services.

Informing Others

Recently, MYP 4 in Language and Literature finished a series of projects to develop their knowledge and skills related to Effective Communication. First, students constructed posters to promote effective and healthy communication. Here, students outlined the key elements of communication such as timing, the need to be concise, adaptability, and participating as an active listener. You can see some of the posters the students created below:

The Interview

Next, students worked with a partner to answer a series of questions from the perspective of a communication expert. The questions focused on the act of communication and how we, as communicators, adapt our forms of communication to best suit the audience and the event. After some research and completing the questions the students then interviewed one another about various topics surrounding communication. Finally, each pair worked together to write an article; for a newspaper, magazine, et.c, about the interview they conducted with the expert. You can see one of the articles below:

As we reflect on this experience, we see that communication is not only about transmitting information but about fostering understanding, connection, and mutual respect. It requires attentiveness, empathy, and adaptability to ensure that both the sender and receiver feel heard and valued.

The projects have not only their communication skills but have also underscored the importance of clarity, conciseness, and active listening in all forms of communication. By embracing these principles, we can strive towards more meaningful and impactful interactions in both our personal and professional lives.
