MYP4 Defne’s Critique of Empty Power

In our MYP4 English Language and Literature unit on propaganda, students were challenged to decode the subtle art of political manipulation. Today, we are spotlighting Defne for her brilliant analytical poster, which holds a mirror up to global political rhetoric.
Instead of just analyzing historical texts, Defne created a bold visual critique aimed directly at modern political figures. When asked about her intended audience, Defne explained:
“My intended audience was the world leaders (could be from anywhere) who act like this. Says impressive words, but there’s nothing really put into action.”
Spotlight on “Glittering Generalities”
To expose this political tactic, Defne focused on the concept of glittering generalities, using emotionally appealing, vague words to win over a crowd without offering substance. She breaks down her deliberate design choices in her own words:
“I wanted to communicate the ‘glittering generalities’ propaganda style. By adding a silhouette of a person speaking loudly with the megaphone and others listening to them in an impressed way, like ‘he’s/she’s going to save us, he’s going to bring peace’.”
By contrasting the looming, anonymous silhouette of the speaker with the blind hope of the spellbound crowd, Defne’s artwork perfectly captures the dangerous gap between seductive slogans and actual accountability.
Brilliant work, Defne! Thank you for demonstrating true critical inquiry and reminding us all to look past glittering words to find the truth.
