Year 4 – Bringing German to Life: From Imagination to Reality

Spread the love

In Year 4, our German learners explored the theme of birthday celebrations, learning how to talk about birthdays and use German in familiar, everyday situations.

We began with a simple question: Wann hast du Geburtstag? (When is your birthday?). The children shared their birthdays and practised asking and answering questions in German.

During our conversations, we made a special discovery – Dana’s birthday happened to fall in the very week we were completing our unit!

This gave us the perfect opportunity to turn our learning into a real celebration and make Dana’s birthday the highlight of our unit.

But before the celebration, there was a little creative surprise!

Using small toy figures and a miniature kitchen, the students created a short video showing a scene in which the characters prepared a delicious Strudel for the birthday party.

And then something special happened – the scene came to life!

What began as a playful scene with toy characters became a real-life experience as the birthday preparations moved from the miniature kitchen into reality.

What started as a simple conversation about birthdays grew into a creative learning experience. Through storytelling, play, and a real birthday celebration, the children had the opportunity to use German in a meaningful context while developing their communication, collaboration, and creative thinking skills.

Enjoy our Year 4 students’ video and discover how a little imagination helped bring their German learning to life!
