A Taste of Mexico: Our Cinco de Mayo Celebration
Cinco de Mayo Celebration
Cinco de Mayo means “Fifth of May” in Spanish. It is a special day that remembers an important battle in Mexico’s history.
A long time ago, in 1862, Mexico was going through a very difficult time. The country owed money to several European countries, including France. France decided to send its army to Mexico to take control.
On May 5, 1862, the French army attacked the Mexican city of Puebla. The French army was much bigger and better prepared, so many people believed they would win easily.
However, the Mexican soldiers, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza, fought bravely. Even though they had fewer soldiers and fewer weapons, they worked together and defeated the French army in the Battle of Puebla.
This victory was very important because it showed that courage, teamwork, and determination can help people overcome difficult challenges.
Today, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated every year on May 5th. In Mexico, it is mainly celebrated in Puebla. In the United States, many people celebrate by enjoying Mexican music, dancing, food, and learning about Mexican culture and history.
Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day. Mexico’s Independence Day is celebrated on September 16th.
Cinco de Mayo reminds us that even when something seems impossible, people can succeed if they stay brave and work together.
During our environmental club, the children watched a short video about the history of this special event and learned why it is celebrated. They then created festive artwork inspired by Mexican culture, using bright colors and cactus-themed designs to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.
But that was not all! We also made a delicious yummy kid-friendly margarita and enjoyed drinking it together during our club time.
