Year 8 Visit to Sereď Holocaust Museum

Last week, as part of our WWII/ Holocaust unit in I&S class, the Year 8 students had the opportunity to visit the Sereď Holocaust Museum. The goal of the visit was for students to see, firsthand, what a concentration camp looks like, as well as to ask questions and learn about Slovak’s involvement in WWII and, specifically, during the Holocaust. I was happy to see that the student’s took this trip seriously, were respectful, and asked questions to the tour guide to better understand how the situation was in Slovakia during this period of history.

About the Museum

“The Sereď Holocaust Museum is part of the Slovak National Museum – Museum of Jewish Culture. It was created on the site of the former labour and concentration camp in Sereď, which represents an authentic location that is linked to the tragic era of the solution of the Jewish question in Slovakia during World War II.

The museum exhibits period documents, photographs, and items related to the persecution of Jews in Slovakia. One of the exhibited artefacts is a cattle wagon used to deport Jews to the Auschwitz concentration camp.

The museum includes an educational centre for events, seminars, and courses focusing on educating and informing the public about Jewish culture and the impact of the Holocaust on the life of Jews in Slovakia.

The museum also serves as a memorial to murdered Slovak Jews. Approximately 16,000 passed through the camp in Sereď alone, most of whom perished during the Holocaust.”
