“Students assess students”

The MYP2 class created 10 assessments with the answer key that consist of questions on length and area and exercises on calculating perimeters and areas of various 2D figures.

This is the culmination of a lot of work, persistence, constant communication and so much time and energy invested in the whole process of learning/applying the new concepts of a math unit that was covered entirely through distance learning.

I feel very proud of my MYP2 students for the wonderful projects they created and the enormous effort they put into this.

10 marvellous assessments with the answer keys, 48 pages of exemplary work.

They followed the scientific procedure for writing papers to the letter. They submitted their draft, received revision notes and comments and went back to the drawing board. And they did this multiple times with no complains until they produced this magnificent work.

Well done MYP2 !!

“The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.”

IB mission statement

This is the ultimate aim we, IB teachers, strive for.

So, how do we encourage our MYP students to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers? The MYP provides the framework for this purpose; the implementation is in our own hands.

The MYP2 class has managed to reach the turning point where all students, as a team, develop their math knowledge, improve their learning skills and help each other succeed. They work independently and stay engaged and actively involved in their math classes; especially during these difficult times due to the closure of the school.

This didn’t happen overnight. As an educator in the fields of Math and Science for more than 20 years, I tried to build trust and respect with each one of my students and understand the reasons that sometimes lead them to disengagement or frustration.

We together succeeded into creating a harmonious atmosphere during the math lessons where everybody would contribute, participate, and develop. All students learnt how to show perseverance and apply their knowledge with creativity and imagination. This mindset paved the way for our distance learning.

From day one during the closure of the school, all students are actively involved in the tasks and the projects that are communicated through telecommunication applications. Our contact is constant; personal feedback in real time, math live sessions twice per week, assignments and tasks on a weekly basis. All students don’t hesitate to ask for clarifications, seek help when needed, tackle all the exercises in the current units and reflect on their work. They strengthen their ability to be responsible for their learning, listen carefully, inquire, think critically, take pride in their work and communicate in the best way.

The IB learner profile in all it’s glory!

And that is the teacher’s best reward.
