Fruit Salad: Learning Through Experience

With our adorable German students from Year 2, we spent Unit 2 learning the names of fruits and vegetables, how to express likes and dislikes, and discussing the importance of fruit and vegetables for a healthy lifestyle. At the same time, we reinforced the use of numbers and colours, naturally integrating language skills across different contexts.

Seeing, hearing/understanding, and pronouncing new words are all essential parts of language learning. However, experiencing something first-hand and using knowledge in a real-life context adds a completely different dimension. Not only does it enrich the experience itself, but it also strengthens memory many times over. Emotions are involved, there is physical interaction with the objects we are talking about, and learning becomes meaningful and memorable.

That is why, as a final product of our German lessons, our little group of German learners prepared a fruit salad together. It may sound simple – cutting fruit and putting it into a bowl – but this activity is always a great success with children. They create something together as a team, communicate with purpose, and proudly enjoy the result of their shared effort.

Take a look at a few moments from our German lesson and see what you need to make a fruit salad. 🍎🍌🥝
