Recipe theater
Have you ever tried acting out a recipe?
If not, you’re missing out—it’s absolutely hilarious! This week in Year 4 we turned our writing lesson into a full-on comedy show, and the best part? It all started with healthy snacks.
We kicked things off by listening to two different recipes. Students closed their eyes, let their imaginations run wild, and tried to picture each step. Was that smoothie going to turn out neon green? Did the fruit kebab have a mountain of strawberries or just one lonely grape? Afterward, they compared their mental pictures to the recipe book illustrations—and there were plenty of giggles when imaginations didn’t quite match reality.
Next up: each student wrote their very own step-by-step recipe for a favorite healthy snack. Smoothies, fruit kebabs, and even wild watermelon heads made their way onto the page. But writing was just the appetizer—the real feast came when they swapped recipes with a partner and had to act them out!
Suddenly, the classroom was filled with invisible blenders whirring, fruit being “chopped” in slow motion, and kebabs being skewered with dramatic flair. Some performances even included surprise improvisation (because sometimes you “spill” the smoothie and have to roll with it).
There was one extra twist: everyone had to choose a partner they don’t usually work with. Watching new pairings form was just as exciting as the performances themselves—it brought fresh energy and lots of unexpected creativity.
By the end, we had a room full of laughter, collaboration, and some seriously imaginative “recipe theater.” Who knew writing instructions could taste this fun?
