Learning First Aid
Today, 12th December 2022, EISB Primary students participated in a first aid training workshop given by the Slovak Red Cross.
This workshop started with an introduction to the Red Cross symbols and their meaning. The children shared interesting answers and asked the instructor some questions, showing their engagement.
Afterward, the instructor proceeded to teach the steps to do Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The first step to take is to check the scene for safety.
Second, we learned how to check for responsiveness, breathing or other life-threatening conditions using shout-tap-shout, and, also, what we should do if the person does not respond and is not breathing or only gasping.
And… How to proceed if the person does not respond? The answer is to shout out for help and to call emergency services, providing useful information about what and where is happening. Through brainstorming, the instructor and the students created a list of national emergency numbers:
After asking for help, we learned how to place the person on their back on a firm surface and how to give chest compressions until the help arrives.
Additionally, Year 6 learned basic knowledge of defibrillators, devices that send an electric pulse or shock to the heart to restore a normal heartbeat. They are used to prevent or correct an arrhythmia, an uneven heartbeat that is too slow or too fast. If the heart suddenly stops, defibrillators can also help it beat again.
