Our Media students completed a cross-disciplinary project that brought together skills from English, Media, and Journalism. The task was to create a Video Essay, where each student produced a short film that reflected their personal analysis or opinion on a topic of their choice.
The project allowed students to combine spoken and written language with visual storytelling techniques. Each video had to include a clear script, strong narration, and relevant visuals such as video footage, images, or graphics. Students were encouraged to use persuasive language and build well-structured arguments, just like they do in their English essaysβbut this time in a visual format.
From the Media and Journalism side, students learned and applied technical skills, including:
-
Three-Point Lighting Setup: Students used key lights, fill lights, and back lights to create professional-looking videos that highlighted mood and depth.
-
Film Composition: They practiced framing, balance, and depth of field to make their visuals more intentional and visually engaging.
-
Rule of Thirds: Each student used this technique to place important subjects or objects in visually strong positions within the frame.
The final results were impressive. Students showed creativity and growth, not only in how they argued their ideas but in how they used media tools to support and strengthen their message.
This project helped them understand how different forms of communicationβwords, images, and soundβcan come together to make an impact.
