Exploring Shadows and Shading in Year 2 Art

This term, our Year 2 students have been busy developing their artistic skills through an exciting project focused on shadows and shading. The goal was to learn how to make their drawings more realistic by carefully considering light and shadow.

Students began by exploring how shadows form and how the direction of a light source affects them. They were then challenged to decide where their imaginary light source would be in their drawings. Using this knowledge, they added highlights and shadows to bring depth and dimension to their artwork.

To put these new skills into practice, the students worked on creating snowman-themed drawings in preparation for our upcoming Christmas concert. Each snowman was carefully shaded, with highlights on the side facing the light source and shadows on the opposite side. The results were stunning, with each piece showcasing the students’ growing understanding of shading techniques.

This project not only honed their art skills but also tied beautifully into the festive spirit.
