Communication Skills
As far as skills go, communication is perhaps the most important of all life skills. We have a fundamental urge to communicate, to pass on information and understand what is being said to us. Yet so many of us are not very good at it. Especially when it comes to effectivelly communicating to a larger crowd. Many find this task daunting and outside of their comfort zone. Stepping outside of your comfort zone drives one towards success, but it is not always easy. One needs to feel supported and safe in their surroundings; respected by their peers – one needs to feel they are part of a community that “has their back”. When that community is present, it is no longer such a daunting task and it is easier to do something that you were previously scared to do. Creating such an atmosphere in the classroom is of utmost importance to ensure that students are willing to take steps to move outside of their comfort zone. And then the magic can happen.
Students in Year 3 took it upon themselves to dissect the meaning of effective communication. They identified aspects that make communication effective, and practiced and perfected these to their best abilities. They reflected upon their learning using self-assessment stratergies with their own recordings and finally created a story-telling event for Preschool and Year 1 in order to use these skills in a real life situation.
