Year 5 Open House: Exploring Materials and Reactions
During our recent Open House event, Year 5 students proudly showcased their learning from our unit of inquiry, How the World Works, with a focus on materials and how they change.
Throughout the unit, students explored a wide range of materials such as glass, wood, and fabric. They investigated their properties and discussed how different materials are used in everyday life. An important part of our learning was also understanding how materials can react with each other. Students conducted simple experiments, including observing reactions between substances.

On Open House day, students became young scientists, guiding parents and visitors through a series of hands-on experiments. They confidently explained what they had learned and demonstrated how different materials behave and interact.
The highlight of the event was the final experiment our classroom volcanoes. Using the classic reaction between baking soda and vinegar, students created an exciting “eruption” as the mixture bubbled and overflowed from the volcano models. This experiment was not only fun but also a great way to demonstrate a chemical reaction in action.

It was wonderful to see students so engaged, confident, and enthusiastic about sharing their learning. The Open House provided a meaningful opportunity for them to present their knowledge, collaborate as a team, and connect their classroom experiences with real-life science.
