The “Golden” Standard of Inquiry: Martin Guniš and Resource Inequality

Continuing our celebration of outstanding student work in Individuals and Societies , we would like to spotlight Martin Guniš (MYP4) for his impressive Unit 3 summative project. Martin took a deep, analytical look at a resource that has dictated global power for centuries: Gold

In his presentation, titled “Resources, Power, and Inequality,” Martin didn’t just look at gold as jewelry or investment. He examined it as a pillar of global economic stability and a source of profound disparity. One of the most fascinating aspects of his work was his case study on the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency. Martin explored the complexities of why a gold-backed currency might struggle with public trust and what that says about the relationship between a government and its citizens.

Martin’s research revealed startling statistics about the concentration of wealth, noting that while gold is a vital tool for preventing inflation, it remains largely inaccessible to the general public, held instead by massive corporations like the Newmont Corporation and governments like the United States.

This visual helps illustrate the massive concentration of gold resources that Martin discussed, highlighting the “Power” element of his project.

What truly impressed us was Martin’s ability to turn the lens back on himself. He reflected on his own “luxurious” access to resources like 24/7 electricity and water, contrasting it with the realities of those in resource-poor regions. He concluded with a call for human responsibility , suggesting that understanding these global systems is the first step towards mitigating inequality.

Martin’s project is a fantastic example of inquiring leadership , showing how our students can take a single element and use it to unpack the entire machinery of global inequality.
