Student-led service event: Kristina Y11 and Tomas Y9
During December, Kristina and Tomas started the organization and collection for a Christmas charity called, Koľko lásky sa zmestí do krabice od topánok? (How much love can you fit into a shoebox?). This is a message from Kristina about this event:
In short, this whole thing is a Christmas charity appeal/charity called, Koľko lásky sa zmestí do krabice od topánok? (How much love can you fit into a shoebox?), which is organized every year. People can join this appeal where they can prepare gift boxes for lonely seniors throughout Slovakia. The goal is to please seniors with a small christmas gift in a shoebox, that will be given on Christmas. Each box must be filled with mostly practical little things. Each box must contain cosmetics, sweets, something warm (like socks), something small that will make them happy or in a great Christmas vibe and, best of all, a letter or postcard that will warm their heart. This collection is organized by the civic association Koľko Lásky o.z., which has been doing this for eight years.
The goal of this whole appeal and mainly organization, is to show seniors that someone is thinking of them and that they are not alone. As a person who wrapped and packed one of those gifts, you will learn that even a simple shoebox can make someone’s day better.
Besides giving gifts, you can also support seniors financially, by making a donation, direct deposit, or donating 2% of your tax. With your financial help, the organization uses this money to continue helping seniors throughout the year.
How does the whole process look like when someone wants to join this charity:
Most importantly, look for a shoebox, wrap it in gift paper, and put small gifts/practical items in it. The boxes are then taken to collection points, where volunteers check them and deliver them to retirement homes and lonely seniors.
How my brother and I got involved with this organization:
Back in our old school about six years ago, my brother’s class teacher involved the whole class in this charity. Since then, we have continued it at home ourselves and it has become our annual tradition, when we always wrap at least two boxes before Christmas to bring joy to seniors. After handing them over to the collection point, we always have a good feeling that we have done a good deed and that we will bring joy to those who deserve it most.
Why we wanted to organize this in our school:
This school year we decided that we would like to try to organize this charity thing in our school. It came out as a good idea to involve our school in it. Since my brother encountered it this way, it can be a good idea for others and I can continue as I have done so far. We have been participating in this appeal for six years now and we wanted to give the students in our school the opportunity to get involved and do a good deed. We wanted to help this organization collect more gifts for seniors so that everyone can get a chance. We hang posters around the school with information about this challenge so that students would notice it and maybe get involved in this charity.
Conclusion:
From the school we collected six shoeboxes, plus we added to it four more which my brother and I packed. In total, we collected ten boxes, which we are very happy about.
