How do you start your own script? Year 7 activity
At the close of the first semester, our Year 7 Slovak language students were met with a problem. While studying the origins of the Slovak language and literature, they were introduced to the humble beginnings of the Early Medieval Principality of Great Moravia. They immediately recognized some words from Old Slavic that sounded rather familiar even to contemporary Slovak speakers. However, it was all scribbled in alien-looking symbols—the Glagolitic script, hlaholika.
The students were then tasked with imagining themselves as 9th-century monks, trying to convince a foreign population to use their writing system. And they quickly learned that any writing system should come with its own idea, its own religion, myths, and legends.
