Nino’s Scaly Sidekick: Agatha and the Lizard Lesson

“Do you know what pet I’m bringing to school?” asked Y3 Nino excitedly.

“Ohhh, I love guessing games!” I exclaimed. “Is it a bird?”

“No”

“Fish?”

“No”

“Mammal!” I was on my last guess (I thought).

“No!”

“…It couldn’t be a reptile?” I was growing concerned at this point.

“Yes!” Nino beamed proudly.

“A lizard?” I asked cautiously, hoping it wouldn’t be anything more slithery.

Another “Yes!”

We were treated to a great reptilian surprise the next day when Nino walked into school with Agatha, nestled safely in a small enclosure with some sand. We were all abuzz with the excitement of a new friend and gaining some knowledge about this beautiful animal.

Agatha may be small now, but Nino explained to his curious classmates that she’ll grow much larger over time. For now, she’s a pocket-sized companion, but with a big personality.

Agatha loves snacking on crickets, about 3 at a time. Nino’s mum shared how important warmth is to the little lizard who loves being he by people. Without it, she can become sad and even change color!

Nino, his classmates and teacher all had great fun taking turns holding the gentle and affectionate reptile.
