Step into Science (Using Knowledge of Genetics in Practical Activities)

The 10th grade biology curriculum includes the topic “Genetics”. For two months, students study the basics of genetics: monohybrid, dihybrid, sex-linked crossing, inheritance of blood groups, how to read and make pedigrees. They completed many worksheets, assignments, and tests. The final stage of the SA was the project “Genetic and phenotypic characteristics of 10th grade students”. All students were free to choose the form of the project and the method of its implementation: individually, in pairs, in groups. The work consisted of several stages.

The students:

– formulated a problem question: Is it possible to create an average genetic and phenotypic portrait of students in our class?

– created a list of traits to collect (about 25);

– collected data in numerical and graphical forms. Some examples you can see here;

– analyzed the data;

– drew a portrait of a student, taking into account dominant or recessive traits;

– asked the AI to create a portrait. The result was negative. Artificial intelligence is prohibited from performing such tasks;

– using Photoshop, a composite sketch of a student was created, as forensic scientists would do.

The final result was as follows. You can easily compare it with the portraits created by students.

Later, Laura and Sharlotta presented this project at the Open House.

This type of work was very interesting for the students. They carried out all stages of the project enthusiastically, in an organized manner, improving their various abilities and skills.
