From Classroom to Real-Life Conversations: Year 4 German in Action

During their last unit in German, our Year 4 students explored how to communicate in a shop. They learned the names of different foods, how to talk about prices, and how to use basic phrases when buying something. Rather than practicing only from their textbooks, the students brought their learning to life through a creative hands-on project.

First, we built our very own classroom shop using a cardboard box. The shop quickly filled with colourful products – vegetables, fruit, and even some sweets. The students also created small customer characters and carefully labelled all the products with prices. To make the experience even more realistic, we designed our own play money and practiced simple shopping dialogues. Step by step, the students learned how to ask for items, talk about prices, and complete a purchase in German.

 

The highlight of the unit came on March 12, when our school organized a fun afternoon event. The Year 4 students decided to take their learning beyond the classroom and offer refreshments to visitors. Guests could choose from juices, mineral water, and even a fresh fruit salad. However, there was one important rule: if they wanted something, they had to ask for it in German!

Visitors received a small leaflet with helpful phrases, such as how to order a drink or ask about the price. With confidence and enthusiasm, our two shop assistants, Roxy and Nelka, did a fantastic job. They served real customers while practicing their German in authentic conversations.

Through this experience, the students discovered that language learning is not only about memorizing vocabulary—it is about using language in real-life situations. Even though the money used for payment was only pretend, the conversations were very real.

It was a wonderful example of how learning can move beyond the classroom and become a meaningful, memorable experience.
