Learning Parts of Speech Through Play: Slovak Lessons Full of Fun
In our Slovak language lessons, we love to learn through play—because the best way for children to remember something is to experience it. To explore parts of speech, our students recently became ice cream vendors. They had to sort piles of “ice cream scoops” into cones based on a given task. The twist? The colors were mixed and didn’t represent specific parts of speech, so they had to focus on the words themselves, not just appearances. It was a fun and engaging challenge that made them think critically.

Later on, they transformed into chemists in a pretend lab. Their mission was to sort colorful test tubes labeled with words into the correct categories—nouns, verbs, adjectives, and more. If they got it wrong, their experiment could “explode”! This playful activity brought grammar to life in a way that worksheets never could.

And since it was International Children’s Day, we ended the lesson with a special treat: real ice cream in the schoolyard. A sweet ending to a day full of learning and laughter! Because when learning is connected to joy and imagination, it sticks with us much longer.
