Paper Boats and Rain Gutters with Year 1

During the final week of school, the Year 1 class embarked on a creative adventure, inspired by a Curious George book, to make paper boats. Initially concerned about the durability of their boats in water, the children brainstormed ways to reinforce them. They decided to use plastic paper covers as a solution. To craft the boats, each student decorated a piece of paper and then carefully placed it inside a plastic folder. With precision, they folded the paper to form sturdy boats that could withstand the water.

To test their designs, the students sent each boat down our “gutter river.” The results were impressive – every boat made it down the river without taking on water! Encouraged by their success, the children then enhanced their boats by adding miniature people and animals. Water play proved to be the perfect activity for the hot weather, providing both fun and a practical learning experience.
