“The Giver”: Lessons from a Unique Society

Ever wondered what it would be like to live in a world where everything is perfectly controlled and everyone is the same? That’s exactly what MYP 2 was trying to find in Lois Lowry’s fascinating book, The Giver.

Let’s dive into what makes this book special and what we can learn from it.

The Giver introduces us to Jonas, a boy in a society with no pain, war, or choices. Everything is controlled to maintain peace. At twelve, Jonas is chosen to be the Receiver of Memory. He learns about the past’s joys and sorrows from the wise old Giver, realizing the importance of emotions, choices, and individuality.

In the last three weeks, MYP 2 has been trying to dive into and explore the lessons of:

Feelings Matter

In Jonas’s world, people don’t feel real emotions. Jonas learns that feelings, even painful ones, are essential for personal growth and connection.

Choices Are Powerful

The community removes choices to keep order, but Jonas discovers that making choices is crucial for expressing ourselves and shaping our destinies.

Memories Are Valuable

Memories help Jonas understand the depth of human experiences. They teach us lessons and remind us who we are.

Differences Enrich Us

Everyone in Jonas’s community is the same to avoid conflict. Jonas learns that our differences make life colorful and help us learn from each other.
