Geography Games!

For my last blog post of 2021, I wanted to let the EISB community know about two very fun websites that you and your child(ren) can play to learn more about the world! If you have some time over the holidays, they could be fun to play together as a family 🙂

I have played these games with my MYP classes and the students have a lot of fun playing them while they learn more about the world together.

  1. Sporcle.com

Sporcle is a fantastic website where you can play thousands of free online trivia quiz games. There is a fun quiz about virtually every topic imaginable, including many for geography.

Here are some of my favourite Sporcle quizzes for learning all the different countries of the world:

Countries of the World

Countries of Europe

Countries of Asia

Countries of Africa

Countries of South America

Countries of North America

Countries of Oceania

I was EXTREMELY impressed with MYP 2 this week who, as a class, were able to name all 197 countries of the world in 14 min and 40 sec… I challenge you to see if you can beat their time!

2. GeoGuessr.com

One of my all time favourite geography websites is GeoGeussr. According to their website, “GeoGuessr is a geography game which takes you on a journey around the world and challenges your ability to recognize your surroundings.”

To play GeoGuessr you need to make an account which costs around 3 EUR per month, but I promise you it is worth every penny! I have played countless hours of this game across this past year – it also makes for the perfect travel outlet if you are unable to travel as much as you’d like due to COVID.

The game drops you somewhere in the world and you have to find out where you are! There are 100s of different categories, including the entire world, Europe, EU, famous places, Christmas markets, Slovakia, or any country you choose!

I was very impressed with MYP 2’s score this week when they played a map of famous places around the world. They managed to score 24,987 points out of a maximum of 25,000. This is very impressive!
