🌿 Summer Camp Week 2: Nature Explorers with The Three Little Pigs 🐷
Our second week of Summer Camp was centred around the theme Nature Explorers, with the story The Three Little Pigs inspiring many of our learning experiences. Throughout the week, the children explored the natural world through play, creativity, and hands-on investigations, making meaningful connections between stories and real-life experiences.
We began by exploring the different materials used by the three little pigs to build their houses. The children worked together to create their own houses using straw, sticks, and LEGO bricks, before testing them with “wind” to find out which structures were the strongest. This sparked thoughtful discussions as the children made predictions, observed what happened, and reflected on why some materials were stronger than others. It was wonderful to see them thinking like young engineers and problem-solvers.
Our outdoor learning experiences encouraged the children to look closely at the world around them. During our nature walks, they collected leaves, sticks, flowers, and other natural materials, using them to build small houses and create beautiful nature bracelets. A Nature Scavenger Hunt encouraged careful observation, curiosity, and teamwork as the children searched for different natural treasures around the school grounds.
Creativity remained at the heart of our week. After collecting a variety of leaves, the children explored colour and texture through leaf painting, discovering that nature itself can become a wonderful artistic tool. They also enjoyed experimenting with Magic Foil Art, where they were fascinated by the vibrant colours and magical effects that appeared. Making bead necklaces and bracelets gave the children another opportunity to express themselves creatively while making thoughtful gifts for their friends.
Working together was an important part of our learning. Team games, including our balloon-building challenge, encouraged the children to communicate, share ideas, and support one another while having plenty of fun along the way.
The children also enjoyed preparing their own fruit cookie sandwiches, developing independence and fine motor skills while sharing a healthy treat together.
A special highlight of the week was our Pottery Workshop. Exploring clay invited the children to engage their senses as they rolled, pressed, shaped, and moulded their own creations. There was no right or wrong way to explore the clay, and it was lovely to see each child approach the experience with confidence, curiosity, and imagination.
To celebrate a wonderful week together, we visited a nearby park on Friday, where the children enjoyed playing outdoors before proudly receiving their Nature Explorers Certificates. We finished our Summer Camp adventure with a well-deserved ice cream, celebrating a week filled with laughter, friendship, and joyful learning.
Looking back on the week, I was reminded that some of the richest learning happens when children are given the time and space to explore, ask questions, create, and make their own discoveries. It was a pleasure to watch their confidence grow as they collaborated, investigated, and connected with the natural world around them. I hope they leave Summer Camp with happy memories, new friendships, and a continued curiosity to keep exploring wherever they go….
