ZOO trip
Last Monday, on March 2, 2026, we visited the Zoologická záhrada Bratislava with our Primary students — and it was a truly meaningful learning experience.
As a Slovak language teacher working with foreign students, I am always looking for authentic ways to connect language learning with real life. Currently, in Slovak for Foreigners, we are exploring the topic of animals. This trip gave our students the opportunity to move beyond textbooks and use their Slovak vocabulary in a natural environment — outdoors, surrounded by real habitats, animal sounds, and living examples of what we discuss in class.
During the outdoor guided tour conducted in Slovak, students observed animals in their enclosures, listened carefully, asked questions, and practiced using Slovak in context. It was wonderful to see them recognizing animal names, describing colors and sizes, and talking about where animals live — in forests, rivers, African savannas, or colder regions.
The excursion also connected beautifully with our Unit 4: How the World Works. Students saw firsthand how animals adapt to their environments, what they eat, how they protect themselves, and how ecosystems are interconnected. Learning became inquiry-based and experiential — not only about vocabulary, but about understanding relationships in nature.

For me as a teacher, moments like this are powerful reminders that language is not just grammar and vocabulary — it is connection, curiosity, and confidence. When students see, hear, and experience learning in real contexts, it becomes meaningful.
Our morning in the zoo was not only educational but also joyful. The students returned full of impressions, questions, and new words — which is exactly what we hope for in language learning.

I am grateful for opportunities like this, where Slovak for Foreigners comes alive outside the classroom walls.
