Expressing Ourselves Through Abstract Art

Last week, our Year 2 students explored how we express ourselves through art in a fun and hands-on way. We focused on abstract art and discovered that pictures don’t always have to look like real-life objects. Sometimes, art is about choosing shapes, colors, and arrangements that show our ideas and feelings.

To begin the activity, students were given a variety of pre-cut shapes, such as squares, rectangles, and triangles in different colors and sizes. Their task was simple: arrange the shapes in any way they liked and glue them down to create their own abstract picture.

The beauty of this project was in its simplicity. Students carefully chose where to place each shape. Some spread their shapes out across the page, while others layered and overlapped them. Some created patterns, and others made pictures or completely imaginative designs. Even though they were using the same types of shapes, every piece turned out unique.

This activity helped build fine motor skills, decision-making, and confidence. Most importantly, it showed students that there is no right or wrong way to create art. By simply cutting, arranging, and gluing shapes where they wanted, they were expressing themselves in their own way.
