๐˜”๐˜ ๐˜— ๐˜š๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ฉ – Course overview 25/26

In MYP 1 to MYP 3, this Spanish course focuses on steadily building studentsโ€™ communicative competence through regular interaction in the target language, allowing them to develop both confidence and fluency as they progress. This growth is supported by engaging in meaningful, real-life tasks that strengthen all four core language skillsโ€”listening, speaking, reading, and writingโ€”while also deepening cultural awareness. As a project-based learning subject, students will complete projects to demonstrate their understanding of the courseโ€™s themes and their ability to express themselves in Spanish in a way that reflects their personal learning style. Over the three years, students are expected to:

  • Comprehend spoken and visual texts

  • Comprehend written and visual texts

  • Communicate effectively in response to written, spoken, and/or visual texts

  • Use language accurately and appropriately, both in written and spoken forms

The MYP language acquisition curriculum is designed to promote inquiry-based learning by developing studentsโ€™ conceptual understanding within meaningful global contexts. It is guided by key concepts such as communication, connections, creativity, and culture, with related concepts like word choice, conventions, and idiom used to deepen learning in a discipline-specific way. Students engage with these concepts through exploration of the MYP global contexts:

  • Identities and relationships

  • Orientation in space and time

  • Personal and cultural expression

  • Scientific and technical innovation

  • Globalization and sustainability

  • Fairness and development

COURSE UNITS

The units connect to the Global Contexts by linking language learning to meaningful, real-life themes. Topics like ยฟQuiรฉn eres?, Hรกbitos saludables, and Somos lo que hacemos explore Identities and relationships as students reflect on who they are, their lifestyles, and how they interact with others. Units such as Mi barrio y mi comunidad and Nos vamos de viaje tie to Orientation in space and time through discussions of places, movement, and cultural settings. Cultural topics like Un mosaico de tradiciones and Las lenguas de mi vida foster Personal and cultural expression by examining heritage, creativity, and diversity. Cรณmo aprendemos? and Las redes sociales relate to Scientific and technical innovation, showing how ideas and technology shape communication and learning. Global concerns appear in ยกCuidemos nuestro mundo! and La diversidad geogrรกfica del mundo hispano under Globalization and sustainability, promoting awareness of environmental and cultural interconnectedness, while Medios de comunicaciรณn links to Fairness and development by analyzing access to information and social equity. This approach develops both language skills and global awareness.

Assessment criteria

In MYP language acquisition, assessment is based on four equally weighted criteria, each linked to a specific objective and scored on a scale of 1โ€“8 with distinct descriptors.

  • Criterion A: Listening โ€“ Understanding and interpreting spoken multimodal texts, analyzing how images and spatial elements combine with oral language to express ideas and attitudes.

  • Criterion B: Reading โ€“ Interpreting written texts alongside visual and spatial features to see how they work together to communicate meaning, values, and perspectives.

  • Criterion C: Speaking โ€“ Engaging in conversations on personal, local, and global topics using various text types, while applying linguistic and literary knowledge to improve accuracy and effectiveness.

  • Criterion D: Writing โ€“ Using appropriate language for different audiences and purposes, and applying knowledge of form, medium, and literary concepts to express ideas and opinions clearly and creatively.

By the end of the course, students will:

  • Develop their communicative competence in Spanish through project-based learning.

  • Strengthen all four core language skillsโ€”listening, speaking, reading, and writingโ€”through meaningful, real-life tasks.

  • Apply language accurately and appropriately in both written and spoken forms.

  • Deepen their cultural awareness while expressing themselves according to their personal learning style.

  • Engage in projects that allow them to comprehend, interpret, and respond to spoken, written, and visual texts effectively.

Project-Based Learning in Action
In MYP Spanish, students use listening, speaking, reading, and writing to create meaningful products, such as presentations or magazines. These projects allow them to apply language skills and cultural knowledge while developing creativity and independent thinking. The blogs below showcase some of their completed work.
