Year 5 Castles Project: Designing the Past with a Modern Twist
In our unit of inquiry, Year 5 students explored the fascinating world of castles through a cross-curricular approach, combining English, ICT, Art, and Mathematics into one engaging project.
During English lessons, students learned about the history of castles, including the materials used, their purpose, and their role in the past. They developed their reading and writing skills while exploring texts about medieval life and castle structures.
In ICT, students conducted research on different types of castles. They gathered information, organized their ideas, and presented their findings to the class, building both their digital and communication skills.
Mathematics played an important role in the project as well. Before beginning construction, students created detailed blueprints of their castles. They carefully planned elements such as the height of towers, layout of rooms, and overall structure. This step encouraged precision, problem-solving, and thoughtful design, ensuring that their ideas were well-organized before moving on to building.
In Art, students brought their ideas to life by designing and painting their castles. Each student created a unique model, combining historical inspiration with their own creativity.

The final outcome was a personalized castle built by each student. While students were inspired by traditional castle features such as towers, walls, and defensive elements, they were also encouraged to think creatively and adapt their designs. Many included modern features inside their castles, such as relaxation areas or imaginative living spaces, blending historical ideas with contemporary thinking.
This project allowed students to connect learning across subjects, think critically, and express their creativity. It was inspiring to see how each student developed their ideas from initial plans to final models, demonstrating both their knowledge and their imagination.
