How To Land a Glider
Matúš Hodermarský from Year 11 successfully completed an inspiring IB Personal Project that combined creativity, research, and his passion for aviation. As a glider pilot in training, he was able to connect his personal experience with academic learning. His project focused on creating an educational video explaining how to land a glider safely and effectively.
As part of the International Baccalaureate programme, students are encouraged to explore topics they are passionate about while developing research, communication, and self-management skills. This project was a great example of that approach. Matúš chose to focus on gliding — a form of aviation in which an aircraft flies without an engine, relying on air currents and precise control.
In the video, he clearly explains the key stages of landing a glider, including planning the landing circuit, controlling speed and descent, using airbrakes correctly, and performing a smooth flare before touchdown. The project also highlights important safety rules, proper preparation before landing, and the importance of understanding weather conditions.
