๐ฃ๏ธ Are We Forgetting How to Talk?
Have you ever noticed how hard itโs become to have a real conversation? We sit together but often look at our screens instead of each other. We nod while someone is speaking, but our minds are already preparing what to say next. Itโs almost as if weโve forgotten how to really listen โ to look someone in the eyes, to ask questions, and to be fully present in the moment.
I crossed over one TED Talk – โ10 Ways to Have a Better Conversation,โ where author of it, radio host Celeste Headlee, explores this modern problem in a powerful and relatable way. She reminds us that conversation is more than exchanging words; itโs about connection. Her talk makes you reflect on how often we interrupt, drift away, or focus on being right instead of truly understanding the other person. Watching it feels like holding up a mirror โ and realizing how easily we can all do better.
At the English International School of Bratislava, we understand how essential real communication is, especially for young people growing up in a digital world. Thatโs why we give our students so many chances to develop these skills โ through class presentations, group projects, debates, performances, and collaborative activities. Every time our students share ideas, speak in front of others, or listen to different viewpoints, theyโre learning the art of genuine conversation โ something that no screen can replace.
So, before your next chat or message, take a moment to think about how you communicate. And if you want a bit of inspiration, watch Celeste Headleeโs talk. It might just change the way you talk โ and listen.
