Living Fully: Year 3 Reflections from the Theatre

A Day at the Theatre

This week, our Year 3 students joined the rest of the primary to attend a performance at DPOH, the P. O. Hviezdoslav City Theatre. The trip, thoughtfully organized by our Slovak teacher, Ms. Dominika, was not only entertaining but also thought-provoking.

A Message for Today’s Generation

The play Terezka a Stratočas (Time-Waster) carried a message that speaks directly to children growing up today. When technology takes over too much of our lives, we lose the moments that matter most. This theme resonated with Year 3 because it connects to our current Unit of Inquiry on Living Things. Living fully means nurturing ourselves and others through choices that bring joy, balance, and connection.

More Than Screens

Instead of spending countless hours on devices, children (and adults too) flourish when they spend time outdoors in nature, noticing the living world around them. They grow when they create with their hands and imagination, making things that bring joy to themselves and others. Strong bonds are built when experiences are shared with family and friends. Communities thrive when everyone contributes. And our lives are enriched when we surround ourselves with music, culture, and art — just as our students did during this theatre visit.

A Mirror for Reflection

For Year 3, the outing was more than just a story on stage. It became a mirror for self-reflection: How do I want to use my attention? How do I want to spend the hours of my day? These are big questions, but children are never too young to start asking them. Their responses after the play were inspiring. Many spoke about choosing play, creativity, and friendships over screens, and recognizing the value of moments spent together.

Linking to Our Central Idea

Through this experience, our students practiced empathy, reflected on emotions, and celebrated the strength of community — all essential elements of our central idea. They discovered that being present and making thoughtful choices is part of what it means to live fully as a “living thing” among others.

An Experience to Remember

It was a day filled with imagination, reflection, and growth. This outing will stay with Year 3 as we continue to explore what it means to live, to learn, and to connect with the world around us.
