Simple Machines and Wacky Ziplines: Year 1’s November Adventure
In November, the Year 1 class dove into the fascinating world of simple machines. We began by experimenting with pulleys, using hangers, string, and binder clips to explore how they work. The children were thrilled to see how these simple tools could lift objects and sparked curiosity about other types of simple machines.
From there, we moved on to ramps, testing them with balls, cars, and materials like wood, cardboard, and plastic. The excitement grew as we shifted to building ziplines. Armed with pipe cleaners, cardboard, tape, and anything else they could find, the children designed chairs and harnesses for dolls to ride the zipline.
The testing phase was filled with energy and creativity. Designs were tweaked and retested until they worked, with every small success bringing cheers and fresh ideas. As the challenge went on, the inventions got wackier—one doll even made its way down the zipline strapped to a toy toilet!
This hands-on exploration of simple machines not only taught the children about physics and problem-solving but also let their imaginations run wild. It was a joyful and memorable learning experience for everyone involved.
