Counting Down to Christmas: Advent in the Environmental Club

This week in our environmental club, we explored the meaning and history of Advent. We started by talking about what Advent is—a time of preparation and reflection leading up to Christmas. The children learned about the Advent calendar, a popular tradition that helps count down the days to Christmas.

We discovered that the very first Advent calendar was created in Germany. Unlike today’s calendars, which often hide chocolates or toys, the original ones displayed small biblical pictures. To make this history come alive, we watched an interesting video showing how Advent calendars have evolved over the years.

To celebrate the spirit of Advent, we created our own calendar in the shape of an evergreen tree. Each little drawer was filled with goodies to make the countdown to Christmas extra special. The children had so much fun decorating and filling their unique calendars while learning about this beautiful tradition.

It was a festive way to combine learning with creativity and kick off the holiday season!
