Year 6 English and Topic Reading

As part of our last unit, Year 6 read After the War: From Auschwitz to Ambleside by the British author, Tom Palmer. While there are many fine novels which explore the Holocaust in ways appropriate for children, After the War is perhaps not so well known as some of the others.

The novel tells the story, based on real events, of three central European boys who have survived the Holocaust. They become close friends in the English countryside, and help each other to come to terms with what has happened to them and how to move forward with their futures.

The stody is told in an appropriate way for Years 5 to 8, while still not holding back on some of the harsh realities which the boys endured.

This novel was part of our unit in which we learned about and explored World War II, and the ways it impacts on all of our lives today. And it helps us to better understand the lessons which we should learn from it, and carry with us every day.
