The Year of the Dragon 2024

Chinese New Year 2024 falls on Saturday, February 10th, 2024, and celebrations culminate with the Lantern Festival on February 24th, 2024. This year we will celebrate The Year of the Dragon.

The Year of the Dragon is one of the twelve animals in the Chinese zodiac cycle. It is considered one of the most auspicious years in Chinese culture, symbolizing power, strength, and good fortune. People born in the Year of the Dragon are believed to inherit these traits, making them natural leaders with charismatic personalities.

According to Chinese astrology, each year is associated with one of the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water) and one of the twelve animals. So, for example, there is a Wood Dragon, a Fire Dragon, and so forth, cycling through the elements and animals in a 60-year cycle.

People born in the Year of the Dragon are said to be ambitious, confident, and courageous. They are often successful in their endeavors due to their determination and assertiveness. However, they can also be seen as stubborn or overly demanding at times.

In Chinese culture, the Year of the Dragon is often celebrated with various festivities, including dragon dances, fireworks, and family gatherings. It is considered a particularly favorable time for starting new ventures or making significant life changes.

During the Environmental Club, we spent time watching and talking about this special celebration. The children painted details from Chinese sceneries into which they incorporated 3D Chinese dragons to celebrate Chinese New Year.
