The Design teacher’s dilemma

My name is Merna Yousef, and I’m the Design teacher. I come from Iraq, a country that puts the Design, Art and Drama as the least important subjects. In my first year teaching in the IB system, I found out that there is a great value in the topic of Design, and exploring that alongside the students was great fun. My goal from teaching is to show the students that the perfect way to approach a project, whether it’s in Design or any other subject, is to find the perfect combination between Critical and Creative thinking.The next time the students will look at a purchased product they will know that there is more than just purchasing an item and to look into what materials it’s made from, which technology was used, what steps were cut through the process to make it practical, and how it was all brought up together.
